I always appreciate your input and visits.

a4g,

I am sure you have your copy of the Reagan Diaries. It portrays anything but the dottering senile stereotype projected by the press and the clods from the entertainment community.

Thursday July 21, 1989:
After dinner watched Dukakis make acceptance speech at Dem. Convention in Atlanta. He pushed all the buttons including premises that sounded as if our country was in the Ec. doldrums instead of a continuing Ec. Expansion. And of course, he charged me with the deficit spending and big debt. Presidents can't spend a dime, only Congress can spend the money and the Cong. is Democratic.

Hmmm. Making great economic conditions look like economic disaster. We wouldn't know about the current 9:1 Democrat media push to achieve results like that, would we?

Friday, Jun 28, 1985:
Yesterday we lost in the Judiciary Committee. Brad Reynolds nomination (by me) to be the No. 3 man at Justice was rejected. ... they couldn't have done what they did without the help of 2 Repubs. Sens. Spector & Mathias. Well, there are 2 Sens. I won't have to help campaign...

When the hell do we get some Voodoo medicine man to excommunicate this Spector from the party?

The diaries are an all around interesting collection of a real leader's thoughts.

Cug,

Hating Carter is like slapping hippies. DPT & JimmyB are cheaters.

May they be continually punished with memes.

.....

Reading through the Malaise speech, it's really a stunning piece of work. It's flaccidity is nearly superhuman. He ticks through nearly two dozen quotes in a orgy of self-doubt whose rambling lack of focus would make Robert Byrd envious.

As ambivalent as I am about the current crop of presidential contenders, I've been thinking a lot lately about what are the essential qualities for a president. Carter offers an outstanding counterexample that helps clarify.

It's not the experience of a John McCain or the executive ability of a Romney or the throat-stomping street smarts of a Guiliani.

The great ones (and you know who I'm talking about) have a supremely confident vision-- that which Carter most certainly lacked most of all-- and while they listen to others' advice, it is only in the context of better implementing that vision. I can imagine Reagan hearing that same litany of 19 voices-- and writing but one note on his legal pad: "I was even more correct than I imagined."

It is that confidence in the future that buoys up the true leader, and it cannot be faked by an impostor like Carter, who despite his "bold" six point plan seemed like a man hedging his crop yield with a quiet short trade in a Chicago commodities pit.

No wonder I'm so blasé about 2008, and why the dream of Fred! seems to hold such sway. "None of the Above", indeed.

-----

Worth the wait, Insolu.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13113450635281934770noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8779369.post-51904226305608343152007-07-18T16:15:00.000-07:002007-07-18T16:15:00.000-07:00Very nice to see you back. ;) In addition, I do be...Very nice to see you back. ;) In addition, I do believe this was the best read in many moons.

Hey, I read twice before attempting to comment (so technically, I'm first!).Uberhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02708457961944700116noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8779369.post-13954905912759893872007-07-18T08:33:00.000-07:002007-07-18T08:33:00.000-07:00What DPT said. What DPT said. The Conservative UAW Guyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16369739122290672136noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8779369.post-90654881374997304812007-07-18T06:19:00.000-07:002007-07-18T06:19:00.000-07:00Welcome Back!
