My Gut tells me otherwise

This is interesting. I read Michelle Malkin's comment regarding this new memorial design.

FLIGHT 93 MEMORIAL: CONTROVERSY

I identified it at once, without reading the comments, as the red crescent of Islam. I instantly thought it was a stunning visual indictment of those responsible for the deaths of flight 93.

I expected cheers from the readers and cries of defamation from CAIR.
Instead, people are venting outrage over what they think is pandering to political correctness.

Was my gut reaction wrong? Since it was a gut reaction, maybe it was the intended result.

Update:

Well. It looks like I may be standing alone in thinking that this memorial is (was if we look from the future) symbolizing a main stream religion, embracing the death of innocent people.

I guess it really was just another overt insult to the American people by an insensitive Mapplethorpe wannabe. It looks like we have just another jerk, who feels that insulting fallen heros for fifteen minutes of national fame is cool.

Maybe my occasional random neuron firing is giving more credit to the creators, than they are due. Where the hell is that Ritalin prescription?

Further Update:

I apologize with burdening my readers with further commentary on this
issue, but It fascinates me.

Read Paula Reed's piece over at the Pittsburg Post-Gazette:

5 designs shine for Flight 93 memorial

Look at the Finalist image for this project. This does not look like
the crescent
despicted in the picture on Malkin's site.

Next we move on to the final pick, again at the Post-Gazette:

Flight 93 marker design picked

Which has this familiar image

This comment by designer Murdoch, completely debunks my original
reaction.
"It will be open and evolving as long as it's there," he said. "Our
memorial is not about offering explanation for what happened, but to
allow people to come to terms with it."
Perhaps his motive had nothing to do with a religious statement, but
the use of the curvature as a parabolic focus to the crash site. The
latter is the view I get from the first image above.
From the beginning, said Milena Murdoch, 46, the focus for them was on the crash site, which many refer to as sacred ground.
So either he was completely ignorant of the religious tie-in, or it was intentional and he is lying. This is still a difficult question, since a crescent, is a simple geometric shape, unlike a swastika, which cannot be mistaken for anything else. I could just as easily say this is the arc of the communist sickle, without the hammer, as well as the the crescent moon of Islam, without the star. It could be a bloody toenail clipping for God's sake.

I keep asking myself how this design, made it through the gauntlet of over a thousand entries, without someone in that process seeing what we all saw on the picture at Malkin's site. I saw it right away. Everybody in the conservative blogosphere saw it right away. But somehow, even families of the flight victims didn't see it.

A nice centerpiece statue in the middle of this nightmare of a 'memorial' would be a stewardess having her throat cut by a terrorist.

I think it would look nicer if it had a emblem portraying a hand giving the "finger" right next to it.

Peakah - There are several holocaust memorials which imply the man made evil of that tragedy. Reminding people of the man made cause, as well as the effect, is not without precedent.

DPT - That sure would bring CAIR and the PC police.

You might wind up 'pissing' off the left. Hmmm. Not a bad idea.

I put some additional comment in the latest update. You have a good point, a4g, regarding the swastika and rising sun, but when is a crescent just a crescent, or a cross just two lines crossing?

The crescent is RED! How could anyone not link the symbol to radical Islam? I'm also reminded of the commie sickle which is equally insulting.

I'm getting increasingly pissed by left-wing wacko intolerance. A bit of quid pro quo like DPT suggests is entirely appropriate!
